HONOUR ROLL

Australia has a rich history of players competing in The Open Championship.

Of the four major championships it is certainly the one that Australian golfers have a closer affinity to, hence the list of 194 players who have competed in the tournament during their career.

The first Australian-born player to compete for the Claret Jug was Walter Travis. Born in Maldon, Victoria, he actually didn’t take up the game until after he emigrated to the United States where he needed to become an American citizen to be able to work. He started playing in 1896 and, just four years later, he won his first of three U.S Amateur titles.

Travis competed in The Open just once, in 1904, at Royal St. George’s where he missed the cut after rounds of 83-88.
