Shooting’s perfect storm
A PERFECT storm has broken over game shooting in this country. Bird flu struck one of the most important areas for game rearing to the sport we know today. The issues have been compounded by a lack of cooperation between governments and the fact that international law is now governing parts of the game shooting sector rather than EU law. This is the cold tailwind of Brexit, and one of the consequences is that we face a new game season like few others in modern times.
What has become clear is that game shooting in this country is now overly reliant on European imports, and when those imports are restricted, our domestic sector faces real difficulties. Not all shoots are face-down in the nettles, however, and although shooting is likely to be heavily affected this season, some far-sighted operations have, either by good fortune or good planning, insulated themselves against the travails facing those who ordered poults from some areas of France.
