Dog breaking. Doesn’t sound pleasant, does it? However, that’s what shooting men did with their dogs in Victorian times, and it wasn’t until the early years of the 20th century that the dog breaker gave way to the dog trainer. I’ve always been intrigued by the dog breakers, and often wondered whether they were as bad as they sounded. My research led to me buying a copy of Dog Breaking:, written by General W N Hutchinson of the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, and late colonel of the Grenadier Guards.
