The stage is set; now for the performers...
THE PAST TWO YEARS WE’VE ALL HAD TO PUT things on ice, and things were no different for Tour de France organisers ASO.
When you think about what went on around the globe during this time, it’s a bloody miracle the race actually started, let alone finished, when the COVID-19 pandemic had its foot on the throttle. It was a small concession to have the race moved to an August 29 start in 2020, and last year for the Grand Départ to be relocated from the Danish capital of Copenhagen to Brest. We all needed something to distract ourselves, and credit must go to the organisers and teams for enabling all three Grand Tours to take place each year.
Alas, Le Pandemic is still around and new strains are emerging, but as they say in the entertainment business, the show must go on.
And unless something horrific happens between me penning this preview and Bicycling Australia editor Nat Bromhead pressing ‘go’ on the printing press and the July 1 start, Le Tour 2022 will begin in Copenhagen with a 13 kilometre race against the clock.
