Learn from your mistakes

Teaching painting at my own personally organised workshops and at two art colleges in London, I encounter art students at different levels, from amateurs to semi-professionals. Sometimes I meet people who are enthusiasts and just want to paint occasionally, while others paint as a hobby or pastime. During my teaching I have often noticed several common mistakes. In this article, I am going to explain the most common ones and provide you with solutions. So, if you recognise any of these, bear them in mind when going to your next class and try your best to make the necessary adjustments. Your work will soar to higher levels.

Problem 1

Speed

This is the first one! I know it sounds a bit obvious but while at art college this was one of my gracious habits. I thought it was actually my strength. I would feel proud that I was able to work so quickly, finishing two paintings when others in my class hadn’t even finished one. What I wasn’t noticing was the quality of my work.
