Of all the elements in the garden, herbaceous borders probably demand the most skill. At their best, they are a symphony of colour and form – the culmination of years of plantsmanship. Traditional borders have their origins in the 17th century, with stretches of planting appearing in Mughal and Dutch plans from this time.
