An e-bike is a bicycle with an electric motor and a battery either bolted on or built in. Unlike Europe, New Zealand has no specific speed limits for e-bikes, but the Ministry of Transport stipulates that motors must be limited to 250 watts of “sustained output” – more than that and it’s a moped and requires a licence to ride.
