NETSCHER WAS PART of Alice Hole’s family’s double-barrelled name before the Second World War and family lore states that they are descended from the Dutch portrait artist Caspar Netscher, who was a contemporary of Rembrandt. Having a master painter rumoured as a distant relative is a fine tale to dine out on but creativity is firmly in her lineage. Her father is an architect – who is still working at 80 – and, as a child, Alice loved leafing through his technical drawing reference books. She found the architectural details beautiful to look at and longed to be able to create drawings of that quality.
