Increasing crop production remains a key imperative for Africa to meet the food needs of an evergrowing population.
Between 2003 and 2019, Africa experienced increases in crop production, but most of the output growth was area driven. With marginal and ecologically fragile land being brought into production, the area expansion resulted in a 34% increase in cropland, albeit at the expense of forests, wetlands, and protected mountains.
