NO PLACE LIKE HOME
WE WATCHED the rising fuel prices with increasing concern, because we’d booked to stay near Folkestone to visit ‘new to us’ places such as Whitstable and Margate, and explore the cycling paths.
This, however, would involve a round trip of 700 miles. It was time for a rethink. We wanted somewhere new to visit, not too far from home, including off-road cycle paths. After studying the maps, we decided on Durham, a city we had visited before, although not the surrounding area.
As home to the first steam locomotives, the region has many disused railway lines which are now cycle paths. Perfect!
We also resolved to minimise use of the car once we pitched up at Durham Grange Caravan and Motorhome Club Site.
Castle and cathedral
We arrived at the site in a bitingly cold, blustery wind, which made putting up the air awning quite a challenge.
Once set up, we could make plans to visit Durham the following day. There’s a Park and Ride facility one mile from the site, but to access it on foot you have to cross four slip roads to the A1(M) on a roundabout that’s very busy. With Joe waiting for a new knee, we decided to drive there. It’s free to park and the bus ticket
