erchant seamen were responsible for crewing British Merchant Navy ships, which kept the country supplied with raw materials during times of both war and peace. Those who were lost at sea in the twoWorldWars and whose bodies were not found are commemorated on the Merchant Marine Memorial atTower Hill in London. Those should be the first point of research and will usually name the individual and give their rating, date of death, the name of the vessel on which they were serving and details of where they are commemorated.
