How a gamekeeper’s tools have changed
As with many jobs, a gamekeeper relies on tools of the trade. Travel back far enough in time and our arsenal was very different from today. Not only because there was little or no restriction, but there was a different rearing regime and great emphasis upon wild stocks.
None of the sophisticated incubators and rearing equipment existed. Broody hens and, eventually, Glevum paraffin incubators were extensively used. I remember them well. With a strong reliance upon wild birds and open rearing fields full of broody coops, predator control was paramount and anything that would bring success was used.
Poison headed the list and it goes without saying that it got results. It was deadly against all corvids, foxes, badgers, cats
