Marine Life in the South Atlantic

Avolcanic island archipelago situated in the South Atlantic Ocean, Tristan da Cunha is renowned for its remoteness, flora, fauna and stamps! Appointed in April 1957 as Colonial Administrator for Tristan, Godfrey Francis Harris spent several years in post, overseeing the production of the 1 February 1960 ‘Marine Life’ definitive stamp issues prior to his relocation to Nigeria in April 1959.

The issue’s theme was logical enough given the dominant economic role fishing played within the archipelago. To develop each design; Harris sought inspiration from several different sources. The Crawfish vignette on the artwork of the 3d derives from H. Elliot’s design on the Tristan da Cunha 2 (figures 3 and 4).
