The western sky was a dazzle of yellows and oranges seeping through the gaps in the hills to Morecambe Bay in the distance. The light picked out the cotton grass, making the fellside look like some alpine meadow. All around us lapwings, curlew and oystercatchers were sounding alarm calls as they rose to mob the gulls quartering the moor, moving them on to the next territory
