1969-’70 Ford Mustang BOSS 302

The U.S. auto scene has changed dramatically since 2008, when the Boss 302 last appeared as a Buyer’s Guide in these pages. We’ve witnessed the rise of Tesla, the fall of Pontiac, Saturn, Hummer (and Saab too), as well as General Motors’ Mary Barra becoming the first woman to lead a major car company.

A new era of factory performance also arrived with V-8 pony cars from Chevrolet, Dodge, and Ford leading the charge. Beloved old nameplates were trotted out, including… a new Boss 302 for the 2012 and 2013 model years.

The Boss was a natural for a 21st century revival. Its predecessor’s backstory as a homologation edition for SCCA Trans-Am road racing fit like a hand in a driving glove, with the power provided by the new Mustang’s howling Coyote 5.0-liter V-8 and the handling potential of its S197 chassis. Dust off those signature Boss 302 stripes over one of the classic colors and viola, a new legend was born.
