Set high on a hill, St Albans’ city centre is a historical gem, its Roman remains vying for attention with its charming medieval streets. Lying on the river Ver, Verulamium (as it was then known) was built in AD 50 and was the third-largest town in Roman Britain, encircled by stone walls.
