LIGHTING UP THE WORLD THE JUBILEE BEACONS A TOUCHING MOMENT BETWEEN THE QUEEN AND WILLIAM AS WINDSOR LEADS THE WAY
In the most magical of moments shared between a grandmother and her grandson, the Queen led the lighting of the beacons from Windsor Castle as the Duke of Cambridge waited 22 miles away at Buckingham Palace to represent her for the illumination of the Tree of Trees sculpture.
The inspired and innovative ceremony was the centrepiece of an event that saw more than 3,000 beacons lit across the four corners of the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man and, for the first time, in every country of the Commonwealth.
It was a perfectly fitting tribute for a monarch who has been a beacon of hope, positivity and light for millions of people through some of the world’s darkest moments over the past 70 years.
The Queen made her way to the quadrangle at Windsor Castle from the Sovereign’s Entrance as dusk fell, a trumpet fanfare signalling her arrival to watching members of the Windsor Castle community.
