There’s life in the old chair yet

WEBBING, springing, knots, layers of stitching…’ Lovingly, Jonathan Conkey inventories the delights of antique upholstery. Mr Conkey has worked in furniture restoration for more than a decade, formerly in partnership, now independently, at Glasgow- based Guild Antiques & Restoration. His workshop, he admits, is rather overcrowded; his current weakness is old sofas: ‘I can’t say no to an old banger. I see a fabulous sofa in an auction and no one bids for it and I can’t bear to let it go to the dump.’ Yet, despite the workshop’s sardine-tin squeeze, Mr Conkey points to the zen-like calm
