Before entering the Finke Desert Race, try before you buy!
Flying in from the eastern states it’s easy to be forgetful of just how hot it is in the centre of Oz until a wave of heat hits you like a slap in the face upon egressing the plane. The airport is tiny and you can see a huge parking lot of COVID grounded planes in the distance. A plane load of other petrol-heads clad in Finke merchandise waited with me as we collected our bags, keen to test our mettle on the infamous Finke track. Turns out this particular May weekend there was plenty of other punters out on the loop keen to get some red dust in their nostrils and some pre-running under their belt before the big race in June.
The prerequisite for the race might have changed this year (you must have ridden Finke before or have competed ion an MA sacntioned event) but the legend that is the Finke Desert Race is stillbigger than I could have imagined. It’s been on my bucket list for years to check it out and maybe have a crack. I am no gun racer though and let’s face it, most of us aren’t up to the challenge of actually being at the pointy end.
