What do you mean it doesn’t shoot?

It is often hard for non-collectors to understand the motivation that many of us have for old historic items. Few can appreciate why we might “need” a uniform, a helmet, a dagger or a medal.

And nothing gets strange looks like a deactivated firearm – sometimes even from firearms collectors. I can’t tell you how many times over the years I’ve heard non-collectors look bewildered when I explain that a particular weapon has been rendered inoperable.

“You mean it doesn’t shoot?” is a question that I’ve been asked quite a lot.
