In 1973, OPEC launched an oil embargo targeting those countries, including the United States, that supported Israel during the October Yom Kippur War. By March 1974, when the embargo was lifted, the price of
a barrel of oil rose globally by nearly 300 percent, from $3 to $12, with prices in the U.S. significantly higher. This increased price of oil sent the American economy into a tailspin.
