WHAT IT’S LIKE TO… PLAY IN THE FIRST WOMEN’S TEST

TRAILBLAZERS. PIONEERS. Groundbreakers. Whatever word you choose, on 13 June 1982 a group of them took to the field to play in the first-ever women’s International: Netherlands v France in Utrecht. Yet at the time they were unaware of the significance of what they were doing.

As Hanneke Brouwer, who played at full-back for the Dutch team, says: “We didn’t realise how important it was. It’s only when I saw on ScrumQueens (in 2013) about the 1,000th International that I thought, ‘We were the first’.”
