Build a Compact and Stealthy 10-20-40 Meter Antenna

WA5VJB has been out of the country on business and was unable to complete this month’s column. Standing in for Kent this month is James Heller, KC0DGR, who tells us about his efforts to put up a decent antenna in an HOA-restricted neighborhood. His solution, it turns out, is really for the birds! - W2VU

I had just moved from Florida to Colorado and went from a large yard with tall trees to a small yard with shoulder high saplings. More importantly, I went from an everything-goes rural setting to a planned neighborhood with an HOA and 136 pages of Rules, Regulations, Restrictions and Covenants. Putting up an antenna was going to be a difficult challenge, but I had to make the best of it. So, how could a decent HF antenna be made so that it was not noticeable to neighbors, did not require a large tree for support, and would fit in my small yard?
