The National Picnic

My favorite day of summer was the day of the National company picnic. In 1959, my father worked as an assembly mechanic at National Machinery in Tiffin, Ohio. Their annual picnic was the third Saturday in August and was held at Meadowbrook Park in Bascom, Ohio. The social committee was in charge, and employees signed up to help with refreshments, contests, amusements and parking.

The day began before 8 a.m., with employees and their families lining up in their cars in front of National’s brick
