BOXED IN?

The revolution has been televised. With more shows on offer than ever before, and with more money now being pumped into making them, the blurry line between TV and movies has almost disappeared completely.

Last year, the estimated number of adult scripted original series in production rose to 559 across broadcast TV and streaming services. Netflix, Amazon and Disney+ now share over half a billion subscribers worldwide, topping a growing list of 42 different Subscription Video On Demand (SVOD) services that each currently have over a million paying customers.

According to Ofcom, the average adult now spends five hours and 40 minutes a day in front of a TV – making up nearly a third of our waking hours. And we’re not just watching rubbish either.

As the likes of , and Marvel are now investing just as much time on the small screen as we are, the quality of modern TV series is rising to match the quantity, with increasingly prestige shows leading the avalanche of content that’s spilling into our watchlists on a daily basis.
