How to streamline messaging apps on Android

In TechLife 128 we went looking for ways to add signatures to SMS messages. We found a good free option in the Textra SMS app from the Google Play Store, plus a good alternative to signatures by using the personal dictionary shortcuts function available in most keyboard apps.

Exploring this got us thinking: Do we really need so many separate communication apps? Mostly the apps chosen were defined by who we wanted to communicate with rather than by unique features. The main ones we use are:

• Google Messages for SMS and MMS texts

• Facebook Messenger (I guess it’s Meta Messenger now)

• WhatsApp
