Car guys who experienced southern California through the mid-1960s fondly remember the era. Sure, they were changing times, and soon the USA would witness turmoil, from the assassination of Martin Luther King to the Vietnam war. But, on a positive note, muscle cars began to rule the street and drag racing had a huge following.

Meanwhile, others of the younger generation started taking an interest in air-cooled VWs, snagging them cheap from local used car dealers as either cheap daily transport, or to modify. It was the dawn of the air-cooled VW customising scene.
