Do you need 8K video?
The announcement by Canon in July 2020 of the first full-frame mirrorless camera capable of recording 8K video created an initial flurry of excitement in the imaging industry. Although professional movie cameras introduced 8K recording in 2013 and some smartphones supported 8K recording in 2019, the R5 was the first model with a predominantly stills-capture design.
Equipped with a new 45-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor, the R5 was able to record uncropped 8K (7680 x 4320 pixels) video at up to 29.97 fps. Canon’s claims of up to 30 minutes of recording time were soon tested when the first potential issue associated with high-resolution video recording reared its ugly head: users began reporting the camera kept stopping due to overheating.
That, in itself, is not surprising: electronics give off heat when they’re working.
In this case, however, the camera’s chassis and shell weren’t) showed the sites of the main heat build-up, Canon quickly released new firmware to address the issue and by late August Firmware Version 1.1.0 arrived with improvements to temperature detection and shooting time control in video shooting.
