How to save and still enjoy your motorhome

There are numerous reasons why we motorhomers are hit harder by these recent price hikes than the average car owner. Generally, we have bigger and thirstier engines and bigger and heavier vehicles than a car.

However, there’s excellent scope for reducing our fuel consumption without downsizing. Here we look at fuel saving from your style of driving to practical measures including buying fuel and engine tuning.

STYLE OF DRIVING

Motoring bodies are all in agreement about the heavy right boot effect on fuel economy. Excessive speed is therefore out and using a light right foot for gentle acceleration is essential for fuel-efficient driving.

Driving in the highest-possible gear for your motorhome, at a moderate speed and changing up through gears as quickly as you can, with the lowest revs possible without the engine straining, is the ideal.

More recent vehicles are fitted with an indicator to encourage the use of the most efficient gear to help with economy driving. With my 2.3-litre Ducato engine, this efficient gear tends to be with engine speed around 1,500 to 2,000rpm. Remember, the faster an engine spins, the more fuel it uses.
