Musk tweets himself to a passion purchase
How much would you invest in something you love? Like anyone with a hobby, I’ve shelled out thousands of dollars over time on various tennis racquets, football boots, yoga classes and boardgames. Most recently, I invested the princely sum of $60 on a set of new frisbees to indulge in my lockdown pastime of disc golf.
When you’re a billionaire, though, the price you can fork out on a passion is on a totally different scale.
In 2015 Kenneth C. Griffin, a billionaire hedge fund manager and art enthusiast, purchased a Willem de Kooning piece titled Interchange for $US300 million ($422 million). At the time it was the most expensive art purchase in history, but that record was smashed just three years later when Saudi Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Farhan Al Saud bought Leonardo da Vinci’s Salvator Mundi for $US450 million.
