GET MOVING!
Active children are not only healthier and happier but also smarter, more creative and more confident, say Dr Eileen Africa from Stellenbosch Kinderkinetics and Catherine Coupar, national junior member manager at Virgin Active.
The pandemic saw a drastic decline in physical activity and an increase in sedentary behaviours. If your children have lost the habit of being active for at least an hour a day, get them back into it by setting an example. While it’s often challenging to pry them away from iPads, TVs and cellphones, especially in winter, you can do this by organising a fun daily family activity that involves movement, such as skipping, gardening, a treasure hunt or obstacle course in the garden, walking the dogs in the park, tree climbing, hiking, playing tennis, riding a bicycle, roller skating, ice skating or dancing. Turn household chores and children’s responsibilities into a game or challenge that they have to complete while praising them for tasks completed successfully. This is also an ideal way to spend quality time with your children. If you need a little more inspiration, Virgin Active has a great video series to help, and a dedicated Kids Playlist.
