Choosing a Defence Handgun
PICKING a defence handgun has become an emotional issue, and in most cases the opinions expressed are far removed from reality. The abundance of (dis)information and different views so easily accessible on the internet, simply leads to more confusion. Following a few guidelines should simplify the process.
Most modern handguns are adequate for self-defence. The most important factors to consider are whether the handgun is utterly reliable, can it be carried comfortably for extended periods, and is it of large enough calibre to ensure reliable penetration to the vitals of whatever you are shooting at.
This means that a 9mm Short (.380 Auto), .38 Special and 9mmP – and larger calibres – will all do the job. Yes, the 9mm Short might be considered borderline by some, but modern defence bullet designs have given it (and the .38 Special) a new lease on life. If you have problems handling say/ or simply google luckygunner ammo test. This is one of the most comprehensive sites I could find and provides excellent cartridge comparisons.
