THIS fibre and its by-products are everywhere, from clothes to bed linen and even the filters in coffee machines. The process the cotton plant undergoes to become an integral part of our everyday lives is a long and complex one that’s taken hundreds of years to refine.

THE PLANT

Cotton is a natural fibre that comes from the cotton plant, a shrub that’s found in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. It belongs to the mallow family of flowering plants, and is related to the hibiscus and okra. The plant reaches a height of 1-2m.
