‘I CAN’T SHUT UP BECAUSE THERE REALLY ARE LIVES AT STAKE’

Martin Lewis is hitting full stride.

“I try and do 20,000 steps a day, that’s the aim. I missed that 16 times last year. I never miss 10,000. It’ll be six years in October,” he says, no trace of being out of breath.

“I’ve got plantar fasciitis at the moment [inflammation of tissue connecting the heel bone to toes] but there would have to be some serious problem for me to miss 10,000.”

Well, there are plenty of serious problems at the moment – not least the cost of living crisis – and Lewis is positioned on the frontline.

If you have a problem (who doesn’t?), if nobody else can help (they can’t or won’t), fortunately you can find Lewis and his essential financial advice on Money Saving Expert.

The website has 16 million visitors per month, 7.5 million are signed up for the weekly Money Tips email, and 2.2 million people are members of the MSE Forum.

Lewis is a champion for the vast sections of society being battered by soaring energy prices, their budgets further squeezed by spiralling food and housing costs. When he encouraged the public to submit meter readings before the energy price cap was lifted, websites crashed, and Lewis was accused by one energy company of “bringing down Britain”.

His journey from money tips curator to the UK’s most influential activist didn’t happen overnight. And it’s a strange position for the 50-year-old to find himself in, with countless people depending on his advice.

How can he keep up his walking workouts when presumably, there’s somebody trying to stop him on every corner?
