One of the most maudlin flicks in the Robin Williams catalogue, this one, loosely based on the real Adams, had him as a one-time mental-health patient who trained to be a doctor and prescribed laughter as the best medicine. As Roger Ebert said at the time: “It’s not merely a tearjerker. It extracts tears individually by liposuction, without anaesthesia.” (1998)
