community project THE GURU NANAK TAPESTRY

The spectacular Guru Nanak Tapestry, a multi-faith textile artwork, was launched on 9 November 2019, the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Devji, the founder of Sikhism. The Tapestry was the culmination of an 18-month project, the brainchild of Manjit Jheeta.

Manjit says, “To mark this significant occasion, I had a vision of a community project that would bring together people from different faiths, cultures and backgrounds to produce a piece of art that would be a tribute to the message of oneness that is fundamental to Sikhism.”

Initially, Manjit thought of a mosaic or paper collage, which would be suitable for many hands, but then she wondered about using fabrics instead. “I love sewing – though I’m not a quilter – and adore fabrics, colours and textures. So the notion of making a vibrant textile piece was very exciting, but I didn’t know where to begin,”
