Animal textures
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
■ Apply colour with pencils sharpened to a good point
■ Learn how to layer colours
■ Control the pressure you use to apply the colour
For the second part in this series on how to use pastel pencils, I have produced a slightly more complicated step-by-step demonstration. This photograph was taken during a photography day at The British Wildlife Centre in Reading, Berkshire. We spent a fabulous day with red foxes, otters, red squirrels, the Scottish wildcats, and a beautiful barn owl. The weather was extremely wet pretty much all day, but that didn’t dampen our spirits at all, as we were surrounded by all these amazing animals. This photograph of a wildcat looking directly at the camera is one I have drawn before in graphite pencils, but I couldn’t resist sharing it with you so that we could paint all those vibrant colours together with pastel pencils and really bring it to life. To assist you further, you can find step-by-step videos corresponding with each of the steps illustrated here on my website,
