If you’re lucky enough to be able to get out for a regular walk close to water, you’ll certainly be repaid with endless inspiration. My daily walk is along part of the Grand Union Canal that stretches 137 miles from the Thames in London to Birmingham and Leicester. Although I often take the same route, the walk is never the same twice as the activity, season and weather are constantly changing the environment, light and atmosphere.
I have painted there in the summer, capturing the fishermen of the angling club with their paraphernalia, and beautiful flashes of turquoise from passing kingfishers. I have captured the muted colours of the winters there with glimpses of intriguing private lives lived in cosy narrow boats, the woodsmoke curling up from their chimneys.
