WHEN MODERN CAR-towed caravanning began back in 1919, there were no official sites, of course. Then, caravanners – who were few and far between – would stop on small wayside spots or ask a landowner if they could pitch up for a few nights.
By the late 1920s and 1930s, small campsites began to emerge. In truth, these were basically just a plot of land, usually a farmer’s field, with a couple of caravans placed in no particular order.
