HINGES MADE EASY

One thing that all RC model airplanes have in common, no matter the type or size, is that they all have hinges that allow their control surfaces to move. Judging from some of the letters we receive from Model Airplane News readers, it seems that proper hinge installation may be viewed as a difficult task. This article will detail some of the hinges and installations common to our hobby.

Whether you enjoy park fliers or midsize and larger airplanes, either kit-built or ARF, I’m sure you’ll benefit from learning the proper ways of hinging things together.

WHAT TYPE TO USE?

Almost all hinges are made out of some sort of tough, molded plastic. However, to keep things simple, let’s divide the types into four basic groups. They are: flat/creased and flat/pinned, hinge points, CA style, and metal piano/specialty hinges. Let’s take a look at each type.
