Stop Chrome 100 breaking the web

Chrome has just released its 100th version and is celebrating its centenary by breaking thousands of websites. That’s the worry, at least, because some sites may be unable to recognise the browser’s first three-digit version number, which will stop them loading pages correctly.

The problem is caused by a piece of code called the ‘User Agent string’, which tells websites which browser version you’re using, for example ‘Chrome/99.0.4844.51’. Some websites, especially older ones, only read the first two digits after the browser name, so they’ll detect ‘Chrome/100.0.4896.20’ as version 10
