ANDROS
The largest of the Bahamian islands at 5960sq km, much of Andros is covered in native trees. Hike into the forest of Caribbean pine and you can find plants like bay geranium and fever grass that are still used in traditional medicine by the farming and fishing communities that make up the islands population of around 8000.
Strange myths have also taken root in the forests of Andros. Halfman, half-bird, the chickcharnee lives in the tallest trees – think bad thoughts about Andros and he will fix your head backwards. The forest also conceals hidden wonders. Huge, round azure-coloured pools, the islands inland blue holes once inspired 16th-century Spanish explorers to christen Andros Isla del Esperita Santo (Island of the Holy Spirit) in tribute to its abundant supplies of freshwater.
Offshore, stretching some 225km, the Andros Barrier Reef is a spectacular coral wall that plunges over 1800m into an underwater canyon known as the Tongue of the Ocean. The diving is world-class, with sites ranging from blue holes and shallow-water coral groves to vertiginous drop-offs festooned with sponges and sea fans.
