INDIE SPOTLIGHT

It’s been almost 50 years since guitarist released his first and only solo album, but given the fact that he’s been in the ongoing employment of Elton John for all that time, and contributed to the efforts of any number of others, lack of endeavor is hardly a problem. Nevertheless, it’s obvious that Johnstone has plenty of music to share in his own right, as readily attests. It’s a family affair for the most part, with several of seven children contributing vocals, keyboards, drums and whatever other instrumental additives are called for at any given time. Not surprisingly then, the music is mostly of a modern pop/rock, an effort that drew on the influence of his initial outfit, the folk rock band Magna Carta. All the songs are original save a sensitive read of The Beatles’ “Here, There and Everywhere,” while some assertive instrumentals provide a perfect balance.
