Q Why insulating a conservatory makes sense

Conservatories, orangeries and sunrooms can be a lovely addition to any home with a view. The idea is that they provide a warm, comfortable place to enjoy the sunshine and admire the rolling hills, the waves on the shore or just to gaze on the fruits of all that horticultural activity. The problem is they do not always match up to expectations.

Anyone with a greenhouse in the garden will know that sun shining through glass will make the interior very warm — good for ripening the tomatoes but you wouldn’t want to live there. Equally the very best double glazing is less than half as good as a wall at keeping the warmth in, so the conservatory might become too cold for comfort in winter.
