ASK THE EXPERTS

KITCHEN DESIGN

Q What’s the difference between a peninsula and a kitchen island?

A They are similar in that both are units that usually take a central position in the kitchen and feature a worktop but, unlike an island, a peninsula is attached to a wall and is only accessible from three sides, as opposed to four on an island unit. If your kitchen is on the smaller side – narrower than 4m for example – then a peninsula can be a good option rather than trying to cram in an island that can make the room look out of proportion. You’ll gain extra worktop, a place to sit and space for storage underneath. The only difference is you can’t walk all the way around it as it’s connected to the wall. But, there are benefits to this: you can create seating up against one side of it, you can use different materials on the peninsula worktop and you can vary the height of the worktop to add character.
