The Great Depression had a tight grip on America by 1935. People all over the country were suffering in the worst economic downturn in history. Millions of people were out of work. Farmers, in particular, had a difficult time. In addition to the tough economic circumstances, the Dust Bowl had made making a living off the land impossible in certain areas.
