My parents knew his father, Sir Fitzroy, for more than 20 years so it had been on my list of places to visit for some time. The opportunity finally arose last summer, towards the end of June, when a settled spell of weather appeared in the forecast. My boat is normally moored at Largs, so I was looking at a distance of almost 300nm, a fair bit of which was crossing open ocean.
