ABELL See American Abell
ADAMSON
In 1858, Daniel Adamson of Hyde Junction, Dukinfield in the Manchester area built a road engine to haul an omnibus for a Mr Schmidt. More may have followed and one was reported ten years later having a race with a steam car made by I W Boulton.
ADER
Clément Ader (1841-1925) was a French bicycle maker in Levallois-Perret, Seine who made a fortune from his pioneer telephone network. He experimented with vehicles and two aeroplanes powered by steam in the 1890s, but when he entered the automobile market in 1900 it was with internal combustion, leading to the first V8 in 1903.
ADVANCE
The Advance Thresher Company was formed in Battle Creek, Michigan, USA in 1883 from an earlier firm called Case (possibly a relation of J I Case born 1819) and Willard Thresher Co. Steam engines were designed by Minard LaFever from Nichols & Shepard and totalled nearly fifteen thousand between 1885 and 1917.
In 1902 Advance jointly with the Minneapolis Threshing Machine Co acquired the traction engine producer American-Abell
