THE SWEETING DYNASTY PART THREE

AEC did not have it all its own way in the Fred Sweeting fleet during this time, as later in 1958, Fred purchased a Bedford S-Type tipper, 373 BYC again coming from Harry Dando. This turned-out to be another flying machine as the Bedford was fitted with a Leyland 0.350 diesel which gave it a spirited performance. Originally it was fitted with an insulated body for carrying tarmac, but this was later replaced by a dropside tipper body by Taylors of Hanham in Bristol.

The purchase of the AEC Mercury four wheelers and the good service they gave, led Fred to purchase his first Mammoth Major rigid eight-wheeler in June 1959. Fitted with a handsome coach built cab by Lee Motors from Bournemouth, 330 DYC a Mk.3 model, looked splendid in the firm’s attractive livery of red chassis, with blue and red cab, with blue body and gold signwriting.
