THE BEAT So Nice to Talk To

The Beat were one of the biggest bands of the late 1970s Ska revival and they’re still going strong. Between gigs on the American leg of their tour Stu was able to grab a moment with their long-standing frontman and driving force, Dave Wakeling, for an exclusive interview.

Stu: “You’re opening your UK 2022 tour at the Big 7 scooter rally. What are you most looking forward to about playing at the Big 7?”

Dave: “Well it’s going to be a brand new reintroduction to British concerts. It already looks like a cracking line-up so we’re going to have to go some to shine through. At the moment we’re playing at full force and the band’s going down amazingly here in the States. We’re sounding very strong and chunky, it’s got a great authentic Ska beat and it pops with a nice pop beat as well.”

Stu: “Could you please give us a teaser of the set list?”

“We perform a slightly different set in Britain than we do in America, often playing more songs from the first album; so I suppose you can guess that Mirror in the Bathroom and Rankin’ Full-Stop will be in the set. I dare say Twist and Crawl will be in there, we’ll
